Contested Heritage

World Heritage sites and EU memory politics, although praised by politicians for their shared values, also exemplify that heritage is often a source of conflict (as do Amsterdam’s own heritage collections that still testify to the Netherlands’ colonial past).

The domain critically addresses notions of authenticity, identity, ownership, retribution and restitution by engaging with the city’s museums and international partners. Participants will work closely with the domain Conservation and Display in order to interrogate the positions of the various stakeholders involved in material heritage and various new strategies for its preservation and exhibition.
